Abstract

This paper examines the problem of input signal design for open-loop identification experiments. The objective is to obtain an accurate step response model for the process by minimizing the area enclosed by the statistical confidence bounds surrounding the step response estimate. The approach used to study this problem is based on the frequency sampling filter (FSF) model structure. The results provide the optimal distribution or percentage of energy in the input signal that should be present at the FSF centre frequencies.
