Abstract
A high gain patch antenna with metamaterial structure operating at 12GHz is presented in this work. The proposed metamaterial structure is composed of two layers of copper grids with a square lattice. The electromagnetic characteristics of the proposed metamaterial structure with zero refraction property and the radiation characteristic of metamaterial patch antenna are simulated using numerical method, and are also compared with the conventional patch antenna. The numerical simulation results show that this metamaterial structure which the refractive index is near zero can congregate the radiation energy, the patch antenna covered by the proposed metamaterial structure can achieve a maximum gain of 13.84dB and the directivity of the patch antenna was improved significantly.
