Abstract

Dynamic wireless charging powers electric vehicles (EVs) even when they are moving on the road. In recent years, the track arrangement of lumped type has been investigated and the double-D (DD) shape has been found as the most appropriate for the track and pickup coil set. This paper investigates an unequal DD (UDD) configuration for the coil set that offers better continuity in powering EVs during their motion and reduces the cost of track deployment. The coupling properties of the UDD coil set have been examined with the help of the JMAG-Designer tool and experimentally verified on a small-scale prototype. Then a design procedure of the track is elaborated, intended to establish the dimensions and distance of the track coils as a function of the power and voltage specifications of the dc–dc converter connected to the EV dc link. Finally, a design example is reported and the charging capabilities of the resulting track are explored with the help of the PSIM simulation tool.
