Abstract

The traditional ultrasonic testing based on transmit-receive longitudinal wave probe faces limitations in inspecting austenitic stainless steel weld of the R&D model for the China fusion engineering test reactor vacuum vessel. A dual matrix array (DMA) probe was designed using CIVA software on the basis of the actual structural characteristics of vacuum vessel welds. The key parameters of the probe were demonstrated, and the sound field was simulated. The verification results of the test blocks showed that the designed DMA probe had the advantages of small size and high signal-to-noise ratio during the inspection process. This research lays critical foundation for the development of automated phased array testing process.
