Abstract

The hybrid electric vehicles has gained increasing importance in automobile manufacturing due to their high efficiency and environmental friendliness. The main components of hybrid electric vehicles are electric power source, electric motor and control system. The electric motor used should have a high torque density and compact design. This paper presents a design of an electric motor for direct drive of electric vehicle. The motor designed was the axial flux inner stator-non slot type. 16 rotor poles were chosen to achieve high torque density and stable rotation at low speed. The motor was simulated by using Ansoft MaxwelBDreg electromagnetic simulation FEM software to find the critical parameters. Using to the simulation results as a guideline, the motor was fabricated and tested in the laboratory. Data from the experimental results were very similar to the simulation results.
