Abstract

The design of a Viterbi equalizer, suitable for the detection of binary data bursts received in the presence of intersymbol interferences, is presented in detail. The main advantages of this Viterbi equalizer are real-valued signal processing at a conveniently chosen intermediate frequency and its flexible signal processing due to the application of interchangeable EPROM look-up tables for the calculation of the branch metrics. The implemented Viterbi equalizer is versatile and therefore well suited for use in undergraduate practice on communications technology. The design is realized by using XILINX series XC3000 logic cell arrays, allowing rapid prototyping at a low price.
