Abstract

In this paper, a theoretical design of a novel 2 × 1 polarization-discriminating multiplexer based on a polarization beam combiner (PBC), two polarization beam splitters (PBS) and a TE/TM polarization converter is presented and discussed. The architecture of this design is based on polarization components. The PBS is used at the input to suppress undesired polarizations, while the PBC is inserted at the output to multiplex two orthogonal linearly polarized signals. The TE/TM converter is inserted between the PBS and the PBC to switch between two orthogonal modes in order to facilitate the multiplexing function. The demultiplexing operation is done in a separate block via a PBS only. The average theoretical insertion loss of the proposed multiplexer is 1.2 dB, while the PBS acting as a demultiplexer presented a very high polarization extinction ratio.
