Abstract

AbstractHigh‐Q design for a zero‐cell photonic crystal nanocavity with a small mode volume is demonstrated and the aptitude for cavity QED experiments is investigated. The optimization of displacements of hexagonal‐lattice air holes in the Γ‐M direction, in addition to the Γ‐K direction, results in a cavity quality factor Q of 2.8 × 105 sustaining the small modal volume of 0.23(λ0/n)3. This high‐Q cavity design is applicable to Si and GaAs semiconductor materials. We define a figure of merit of cavities representing spectral clarity of polariton doublet for cavity QED experiments and show the proposed H0 cavity's advantage over an L3 type cavity used so far.
