Abstract

This paper presents a double spiral near field UHF RFID reader antenna with low Far-Field Gain. The antenna prototype is printed on to a piece of FR4 substrate with an overall size of 111 × 121 × 1.6 mm3. The proposed antenna is composed of a power divider, phase shifter and two lines finished by two symmetric spirals. It generates a strong uniformly distributed magnetic field over a large interrogation. The proposed antenna has low far-field gain and broadband characteristics. The near field operation is achieved by introducing a 90° phase shift between the currents flowing along the opposite side of two branches. An antenna with a spiral of six turns has been fabricated and measured. The experimental results show that the antenna achieves the impedance matching over the frequency range from 800 to 1000 MHz. The measured tests on reading range are carried out, and reading distance of far-field half-wave dipole antenna achieves a reader range of 20 cm.
