Abstract
In this paper we present the theoretical study of a dielectric-loaded standing wave accelerator structure with enhanced shunt impedance. The accelerator structure operates in a TM020 mode at 5.10 GHz. At the same accelerating gradient, the ohmic and dielectric power dissipation in the proposed cavity is 40% lower than the ohmic power dissipation in a conventional metallic pillbox cavity operating in a TM010 mode. The enhancement of the microwave power utilization efficiency leads to the cost reduction of the microwave source infrastructure and the operation. In compact accelerator applications, this type of accelerator structures are of potential use in extreme environment conditions such as space missions where close scrutiny must be exercised over the power availability and the waste heat dissipation.
