Abstract

This letter designs a low-profile Archimedean spiral antenna based on an Electromagnetic Band Gap (EBG) ground. Utilization of the EBG structure offers an antenna height reduction from $\lambda/4=5\text{mm}$ to 1.825mm, including the thickness of the EBG structure, compared to the traditional perfect electric conducting (PEC) ground placed at a distance of $\lambda/4$ below the antenna, realizing a reduction of 63.5%. Meanwhile, in the working bandwidth of the designed Archimedean spiral antenna above EBG, there is almost no loss to its directive gain compared to the conventional antenna above PEC.
