Abstract

The design of a structure for the 150-mm coil aperture Nb 3 Sn quadrupole magnet is presented to demonstrate principles for use in the upgrade for LHC at CERN. The design builds on existing technology developed in LARP and further optimizes the features required for operation in the accelerator. The structure and the assembly methods include features for maintaining mechanical alignment of the coils to achieve the required field quality. The structure also incorporates a helium containment vessel and provisions for cooling with 1.9 K helium. The paper will include critical design elements and supporting structural analysis.
