Abstract

In this paper, design simulation and fabrication of low cost planar phase array for radar applications, is proposed. For better performance, small size and large bandwidth, vivaldi patch antenna has been used as antenna array element. Design of single element vivaldi antenna has been simulated in HFSS software and its shape is optimized for best pattern in both elevation and azimuth plane. FR4 substrate is used for antenna array because of its ruggedness and low cost. 4×4 antenna array is simulated and optimized in HFSS to verify input VSWR requirement for X band. Ground plane is used in order to increase gain and reduce the back lobe of antenna array. Radiation pattern of fabricated 4×4 antenna array is measured in broadside and ±22.5°. Scanned positions has been measured to perform 45° beam scanning in both azimuth and elevation plane.
