Abstract

A new 2-D subband coding scheme is proposed. Two-dimensional quadrature mirror filters (QMF's) can be efficiently designed by a separable product of identical 1-D QMF filters. Smith, Barnwell, and Mintzer's 1-D QMF design technique is carefully chosen and used in our 2-D subband filters. The resultant 2-D QMF filters and subband coder allow for "exact" reconstruction free of aliasing and of phase and frequency distortion, and will be very useful for image subband coding applications.
