Abstract

This paper presents design of 16x16 array antenna with multi-layer configuration for phased array radar operating in the X-band (9-10 GHz). The array was created on top of upper substrate using E-shaped patch antenna elements with a 13% bandwidth and gain of 7.4 dBi at centre frequency 9.5 GHz. On the bottom of second substrate, a feed network (256way power divider) has been constructed to excite the array elements through feed probe. The array antenna’s simulated results indicate that the return loss is better than 10 dB over the frequency range 8.9-10.1 GHz, with a gain of 28±0.3 dBi for whole operational frequency band and a beamwidth of 6.4°/5.9° in the E & H plane. The obtained front-to-back ratio and cross-polarization levels are better than 13 dB and 20 dB respectively. This has been implemented for a ±60° azimuth and ±45° elevation scanning active phased array airborne radar.
