Abstract

In this research, a design methodology for minimizing the contact width between the pressure lip seal and the shaft was developed, by employing Taguchi quality engineering and statistical design of experiment method with CAE analysis. Instead of the real experimental measurements, the influential design parameters can be performed by simulation to save cost and time. A lip seal of 38 mm diameter was optimized, as a design case, according to the contact pressure response to the Mooney-Rivlin material properties and physical dimensions in different operation environments. The current methodology is shown to be an effective design tool for a pressure lip seal.
