Abstract

The efforts to improve the security of a lightning strike is giving a lightning early warning system. One method that can be used to get the warning is to measure the electric field in the atmosphere. Electric field mill (EFM) is an instrument that can be used to measure the strength of electric fields in atmosphere as a result of electrostatic charge in CB cloud and the ground. In this experiment, EFM is designed, implemented, tested and calibrated. The testing characteristic is done by giving high voltage electric fields up to 15kV/m. The result is the EFM can be used to measure electric fields between −15kV/m and 15kV/m. EFM can also integrated with computer as a software to give an alarm if the electric fields is potentially generate lightning.
