Abstract

The book presents an introductory text about the latest scientific evidence on ageing drawn from the cross-council New Dynamics of Ageing (NDA) programme, the UK's largest research programme in ageing. The chapter provides an overview and discussion of the contribution of six of the NDA projects which had a high design dimension to them, including GSA's 'envision' project. 'Envision' evaluated a prototype visualisation method concerned with gaining benefit from understanding the value of scientific data obtained from older adults during daily living tasks which will be visualized in an innovative format. This facilitated cross-disciplinary discourse and developed insights about the ageing experience using a process and an innovative tool which empower older adults to participate on an equal basis with specialist disciplines, a process intended to influence care and rehabilitation strategies, ways of thinking about the design of the built environment, furniture, products and technological devices, and to determine quality-of-life issues and extent of working capabilities and daily living activities in later life. The positive findings from the project enabled subsequent research through the subsequent 'envisage' project funded from the MRC LLHW programme.
