Abstract

SUMMARY This paper describes the laboratory determination of strength and deformation parameters of gypsum and marl and their intrinsic properties together with the characterisation of rock mass properties in underground gypsum mining for the design of room and pillar mine workings. In order to determine the Rock mass quality, joint survey and joint analysis have been carried out. The rock mass characterisation has been carried out according to the Q system and the unsupported open span determined. The influence of pillar volume and geometric shape on pillar design are outlined. A design chart is given which, relates the mean stress on pillar due to the cover load to the percentage of extraction, and the width/height ratio of the pillar. Taking the height of the extraction, and the room span into consideration the pillar width and stable life of pillars are determined from the design chart. This technique has been applied for the design of stopes in a gypsum mine.
