Abstract

It has been stated that Design by Computer will makes its greatest contribution in the non-creative areas of engineering design. Whilst not disputing that automation of the clerical processes associated with design can lighten onerous tasks, shorten schedules and cheapen products, the author examines the creative aspect of design. A summary of some of the analytical work already carried out by British Railways Research Department, is followed by a brief description of current work defining a real-time package for train regulation and finallya suggested weighting process for design decisions is introduced. This is the survey paper for a group of detail articles covering the technical work using computers in British Railways.
