Abstract
The design and performance details of a 20 kg conventional pressure kier, integrated with a solar water–heating system is discussed. The ‘solar kier’ uses a solvent–assisted chemical formulation for carrying out simultaneous desizing, scouring and bleaching of cotton. Requisite properties, e. g. whiteness and absorbancy, were obtained with minimal strength loss. The economic advantages of the system are outlined.
