Abstract

Design requirements and approaches are described for the EPRI-sponsored development of an integrated, microprocessor-based system for relaying and control of transmission substations. The paper summarizes the architecture, hardware and software design, functional capabilities, and economics. Many important user benefits inherent in this dramatically different approach are listed.
