Abstract

The article evaluates the development of applications for lightweight concrete and the effects of mix design on material characteristics. The use of code provisions for structural lightweight concrete in specifying design requirements, material classifications, execution recommendations and quality control measures are considered. The properties of lightweight concrete are examined detailing the effect of density on strength and the effect of varying aggregate modulus of deformation on compressive strength. A number of examples of the use of lightweight concrete in bridge construction are mentioned where the effect of reduced self-weight is seen to be of advantage, in various ways. The effect of the weaker response to tensile load stresses in lightweight aggregate concrete is also examined. (TRRL)
