Abstract

Map projections are used to transform the non-planar surface of a spheroid/ellipsoid onto a planar surface, a map. Since each map projection changes, to a greater or lesser degree, the geometric properties of a map and choice of map projection can influence its effectiveness as a means of communicating spatial form. The knowledge necessary to choose a projection, although limited in scope and size, is not easy to apply because of the number of tradeoffs and interdependencies involved. In order to enhance the choice process and to distribute the expertise to nonspecialists, who often have to make decisions regarding a map projection, a knowledge-based system capable of making decision recommendations can be constructed. In this paper, the design of such a system, Map Projection Knowledge-Based System (MaPKBS), is discussed. The basic steps of the design are presented along with the system structural components and its architecture.
