Abstract

ABSTRACT Results of recent studies on design of offshore structures, under hostile environment & ran-dom loading, were reviewed. This included the effects of residual stresses, weld size and crack propagation in air and see-water for both welded and threaded con-nections. Next, the design con-siderations for a successful design of an offshore structure were discussed with particular emphasis placed on material selection, compatibility, geometry, strength, fabrication, protection, maintainability and economy. Finally, practical case histories on failure of some off-shore structures were examined.
