Abstract

Analyses and study of the influence of high voltage direct current (HVDC) line on improving and increasing the transmission capacity of the Iraqi 400kV grid are presented in this paper. In case of overload, the HVDC line in the Iraqi grid is tested and used to improve power loss reduction, voltage level optimization and power flow improvement. To solve power system performance functions, the MATLAB package used as theoretical part and a power system engineering (PSS/E) is employed as a practical part of the system analyze. In this paper, PSS / E is used to model HVDC lines in an effective region of Iraqi networks and to perform comparative studies to test the optimum location of HVDC line in AC/DC case study in a portion of the Iraqi national network. The most important result we obtained is a significant reduction in the total power generation and power system losses of the Iraqi grid due to the application of HVDC in the most efficient bus bars (RUMILPPG-BGC-MMDH), which is also more suitable for what HVDC has a high capacity to transmit power over large distances While maintaining the voltage level within the permissible limits.
