Abstract

Abstract In Bangladesh, there are lots of islands located near the Bay of Bengal. Saint Martin is one of the most popular and populated islands among them. It is situated 9 km south of Bangladesh land and it has around 8000 people live in there. Though Saint Martin is a small island, it has a large power demand. For this huge power demand, the diesel power generator cannot full fill the demand so hybrid power generation comprises of the solution in this case. The proposed hybrid system utilizes solar photovoltaic (PV), wind turbine, biomass and biogas system for the purpose of electricity generation. The purpose of hybrid system is cost effective, clean energy and better lifestyle for island people. The proposed system fulfills the demand of 161 kWh/day primary load and of 14 kW peak load to meet the lack of electricity. Mainly the sensitivity analysis calculates the solar irradiation, wind speed, solar PV cost, biomass cost for the optimum result. In the HOMER software, solar PV, wind turbines, biomass, biogas and batteries are needed for the purpose of electricity generation. In hybrid power generation, the carbon emission rate 23 ton/yr. The total cost of the system is about BDT 10,326,260 and annual maintenance cost is BDT/yr 786,209. The main task of hybrid system is to increase the system efficiency and the use of renewable energy in the coastal area.
