Abstract

We propose an electrically pumped high-index-contrast grating (HCG)-based organic vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (OVCSEL). The microcavity structure consists of an organic light emitting diode inserted in a very high quality factor hybrid photonic crystal (HPC) in which the top DBR is replaced by a sub-wavelength HCG layer. The results of simulation show that quality factor of the proposed microcavity is at least 280,000. Therefore, a considerable reduction of the laser threshold under electrical pump is expected. We also investigate the threshold behavior and the dynamics of the OVCSEL under electrical pump. Results from numerical simulation show that the structure can reach the lasing condition under electrical pump with a current density above 2 A/cm2.
