Abstract

Many high power applications worldwide are looking into the practicality of replacing single very high power sources by multiple low to moderate level of power sources 1,2 . Currently, the 2 MW Lower Hybrid Current Drive (LHCD) system of SST-1 Tokamak commissioned in Institute for Plasma Research, India uses 4 klystrons each of 500 kW CW power at 3.7 GHz. To avoid the problems of using klystrons such as higher conditioning and calibration time, it is conceptualized to replace these klystrons by multiple CW magnetrons of moderate power level. This will also help in graceful degradation of power in case of partial supply unit failures.
