Abstract
Design results for the fundamental frequency, 8.568 GHz, coaxial gyroklystron at the University of Maryland will be presented. In order to accommodate the vast power traveling through the microwave circuit, the cross section of our system has been increased by over a factor of two from the previous 30 MW system; this increase results in an even more highly overmoded system. A coaxial microwave circuit has been chosen to alleviate the problems associated with highly overmoded waveguides. Computer simulations have resulted in the design of a circular TE/sub 01/ output cavity which not only is stable to spurious oscillations but also achieves RF efficiencies near 40%. The output cavity's low design Q of 122 and effective length of 2.6 cm lowers the cavity's susceptibility to parasitic modes. Cold test results of the actual input and output cavities will be performed and compared with code predict ions. The present status in the modifications of the modulator, beam transport and diagnostic systems to accommodate the goal of 100 MW peak power production will also be presented.
