Abstract

This research describes a new procedure of mix design and performance evaluation based on cold recycled mix (CRM) design with emulsified asphalt (EA). For the mix design, modified Superpave was recommendd based on the analysis and modification of Marshall mix design, and appropriate molding techniques were adopted. For evaluating performance of CRM with EA, evaluation was divided into 2 stages (initial and final curing). In the initial curing, the Cantabro test was used to evaluate its raveling resistance, and the modified AASHTO T283 test was used to analyze the adverse influence of water in the recycled mixture. In the final curing, the performance tests included the wheel test, freeze-thaw split test, and bending beam test, which were used to evaluate pavement performance in service. Using a waste asphalt mixture from a practical project, the performance of CRM prepared and constructed in accordance with the new procedure was evaluated in the lab and compared with conventional AC-25 HMA. It is shown that this procedure can be used as a feasible method for CRM design with EA.
