Abstract

• Configurations for hybrid absorption-membrane processes for CO 2 capture reviewed. • Both liquid and gas permeation membranes considered. • Trade-off between capital and operating costs. • Systems level and unit level optimization opportunities discussed. • Several areas identified where further understanding is desired. Hybrid membrane–solvent processes can greatly aid to the flexibility of post-combustion capture systems by synergistically exploiting the advantages of the membrane and absorption systems. This paper reviews several configurations for absorbers integrated with gas permeation and liquid permeation membranes. It identifies several unit level and systems level design and optimization opportunities that can be helpful in realizing the potential of these hybrid systems.
