Abstract

Circular planar spiral coils have been most commonly used to design magnetic coupler in wireless power transfer (WPT) system. To render the coupling coefficient k of the coupler with circular spiral coils as high as possible, the relationship between k and the physical sizes of coupler such as coils' external diameter De, coils' internal diameter Di, line spacing p, and thickness of ferrite substrate t is researched. The coupler is modeled and simulated with 3-D magnetic field. Simulation results showed that the coupler had a relatively higher coupling coefficient k with Di/De≤0.4 despite different ferrite substrates, line spacing, air gaps, and lateral misalignment. Based on the simulation results, an optimized design procedure for the magnetic coupler with the circular planar spiral coils is provided.
