Abstract
Fault-tolerant programming methods improve software reliability by using the principles of design diversity and redundancy. Design diversity and redundancy, however, escalate the cost of software design and development. In this article, we study the reliability of hybrid software fault-tolerant systems based on recovery block and n-version programming schemes. Heuristic methods are developed to construct optimal hybrid software fault-tolerant systems with total cost constraints.
