Abstract

Urodynamics investigation is a functional assessment of the lower urinary tract to provide objective pathophysiological explanations for the lower urinary tract dysfunction (LUTD). Conventional cystometry can be performed using retrograde filling of the bladder within a room and is employed by most centers. However, it has been criticized for being an unphysiological test, which fails to provide a diagnosis in a significant proportion of patients. To overcome some of these limitations, ambulatory urodynamic monitoring (AUM) was developed. AUM involves the recording of the bladder and abdominal pressure by using micro transducer catheters and a portable recording device. The bladder is allowed to fill naturally and the patient is able to move about freely during the test. In this study, we developed the AUM system and calibrated the technical performance of this system. We concluded that the proposed system can provide good quality recordings and should prove useful in future evaluations of natural filling urodynamics studies.
