Abstract

Sleep quality are found to be decreased in the past decades from several surveys. And researches conducted that uncomfortable mattress can be one of the important reasons causing sleeping problems. This paper presents the design and manufacturing of variable stiffness mattress with cellular structure to maintain uniform body support. The relation between the hexagonal honeycomb thickness and stiffness is studied and tested. The author applies image analysis technique to extract and digitize the information from the body load distribution map. Voxelization is used to determine the thickness of each unit hexagon. A comparison between the designed mattress and current existing mattress is given based on their deformation under same load. With the study of the unit cell and voxelization technique, our designed mattress has less variation on deformation compare to the uniform mattress which indicates we have more control on the deformation with this proposed methodology.
