Abstract

A colloquium was organised by the Design Group [M1] of the IEE's Management and Design Division, and took place on the 9th February 1984 at the Institution of Electrical Engineers, Savoy Place, London. The papers of four contributors are presented. They deal with four aspects of design: central function, education, use of computer aids and cost. An outline of the Thorn EMI Ferguson TX project is given to illustrate how cost can be efficiently reduced by good design. A summarised discussion of the colloquium is given, which concludes with the fact that more information should be presented to engineers at the start of the design process.
