Abstract

Wireless multimedia sensor networks (WMSNs) are special wireless sensor networks (WSNs) for acquiring and transmitting multimedia data such as images, audio and video streams, and scalar data, etc. WMSNs have mass data to process and transmit, but the hardware resource is constrained, hence, improving the efficiency of network and system structure is very important in WMSNs. This paper presents an intelligence WMSNs system with three layers for acquiring images and video streams in different layer, which can reduce the video stream data redundancy and improve the efficiency of network. The node layer uses imaging sensor to acquire still images in a regular frequency and sends images to sink node layer, and the sink node layer pre-processes images and recognizes the target. The analog video module will be turned on to acquire video stream and sends video data to the control layer if the target recognized. This paper also introduces a wireless sensor node hardware implementation based on the microprocessor ATmega128L, 2.4 GHz wireless communication chip IP-Link1221, and a CMOS imaging sensor OV2610. We also present experiments for certifying the acquisition and communication ability of the node.
