Abstract

Large-scale industries in developing nations face interruptions in work due to unstable electricity supply. These industries become less efficient and require a continuous power supply. To overcome issues related to power failure, most industries use generator for backup power supply. Multiple generators are used to fully meet the load demand in large industries, and manually controlling multiple generators is not possible. Also, manual synchronization of multiple generators takes more time for switching of loads. This can be overcome though the automation of the processes to switch the generators automatically based on load demand, thus providing a continuous power supply to the load, and ensure fast switching of loads between the mains power supply and Diesel Generators (DGs). This paper enumerates the appropriate selection of ratings of air circuit breakers (ACBs), transformers and DGs along with the interlocking scheme of generators and transformers using a programmable logic controller (PLC). PLC programming is done using ladder logic and the SCADA system is designed for monitoring the system. The developed PLC based SCADA scheme is scalable and can be suitably adopted for high load demand systems.
