Abstract

This paper presents the potential intelligent functions of the electronic power transformer for smart grids. A 10-kV mega-watt-level three-phase electronic power transformer (EPT) industrial prototype is proposed to perform the smart grid functions. A special ac-dc-dc-ac module (abbreviated as power module) is designed based on a highvoltage power cell, a medium-frequency isolation transformer, and a low-voltage power cell with an LC filter. The main circuit of the prototype is built by using many power modules with input-series output-parallel structure. And the assembling relevant problems are addressed. A port-independence multilevel control and protection system is developed. Several typical smart grid functions are realized in the prototype. The laboratory tests are carried out and the results verified the design and the functions of the proposed industrial prototype.
