Abstract

Nowadays for application like high-speed ground transportation and specific industrial application including transportation, conveyer system, actuator, material handling, etc. there is need to develop in linear induction motor. These applications require machines that can produce large forces, operate at high speeds, and can be controlled precisely to meet performance requirements. In this project, the working principle of Double-sided linear induction motor (DSLIM) is same as rotational induction motor, but the concepts and parameters used in this motor are different from other type of electrical machines. While designing the DSLIM parameters like primary voltage, number of poles, frequency, number of phases, etc. are considered. Remaining parameters are obtained by design calculations. The performance curves of the DSLIM i.e., thrust and efficiency are drawn and then analyzed for different target thrust values and rated slip. The effect of varying parameters of the DSLIM such as airgap, thickness of aluminum sheet and the number of poles on the performance of DSLIM are analyzed and the results are discussed. The linear induction motor is very useful at places requiring linear motion since it produces thrust directly and has a simple structure, easy maintenance, high acceleration/deceleration. The most obvious advantage of linear motor is that it has no gears and requires no mechanical rotary to linear converters.
