Abstract

In this paper, a new shunt design method using piezoelectric materials is proposed.Admittance is introduced to represent the electro-mechanical characteristics of piezoelectricstructures and to predict the performance of the piezoelectric shunt system. It is shownthat the admittance of the piezoelectric structure is proportional to the dissipated energyin the shunt circuit. Admittance is used as a design index to construct the piezoelectricshunt system, and it is obtained by the finite element method. In order to demonstrate theeffectiveness of the proposed design method, vibration reduction of the piezoelectricstructure with the shunt circuit is realized by experiments. Damped system responses ofthe piezoelectric structure in the frequency and time domains verify that theadmittance is proportional to the performance of the piezoelectric shunt system.
