Abstract

A Front‐end (FE) is an interface between a synchrotron radiation (SR) source and a beamline. In this paper we present the design details of the major components of a newly constructed front‐end at Indus‐2 developed in house. A front‐end has many critical functions to perform, like storage ring vacuum protection, absorption of radiation and heat when the beamline is not in operation, proper synchrotron beam definition and photon beam position monitoring. These functions are executed by means of different front‐end components like collimator, water cooled shutter, fast shutter, gate valve, photon beam position monitor, fixed mask and safety shutter. Except fast shutter and gate valve, all the components have been designed and fabricated indigenously. All the valves and shutters are pneumatically operated remotely through solenoids. The whole front‐end assembly under ultra high vacuum is tested inside the Indus‐2 tunnel with all the controls and interlocks.
