Abstract

We demonstrate the design and development of an online road traffic information system. The roles of the proposed system can be categorized into three key functions: collection of real time video streams of traffic jam-prone locations & storing, processing video streams to measure traffic conditions, and display of real-time video streams and road traffic information on the website. This first step of the system is to collect real time video streams coming out from the closed-circuit television cameras located in busy locations of the city and store them in the centralized data center. The next step is to process the video frames at regular intervals using our video processing software to count the number of cars and their density and estimate traffic jams. Finally, we designed a website to provide online video streams of any traffic point along with the number of cars and traffic status, and various traffic information of any path such as the shortest path, path length, and traffic density. Furthermore, we evaluated the performance of various components of the website and found good results. In addition, we studied the real-life performance analysis data collected from the users. The proposed road traffic information system will certainly contribute to smooth traffic movements in megacities of developing countries.
