Abstract

AbstractGreen energy sources make inroads into grid, which paved way for the development of small-scale power system. Conventional power system consists of large machinery and inefficient power electronic devices. This architecture is too costly for rural electrification. One way of using the renewable source for rural electrification is to consume it at the point of generation. This idea drove to the concept of self-sustaining house named as DC house. A miniature power system built with complete DC source, electronics and load is called DC house or DC nanogrid. The outline and concept of DC house powered by a solar PV is presented here. Manual calculation for the design of solar nanogrid (SONG) and estimation to build a DC house are briefed herein. For rural area, SONG is the best option as it is possible to harvest low cost, ecofriendly green energy at the consumer premises. A systematic design of each component in the solar nanogrid is summarized. Maintenance schedule of each component and different DC loads available are discussed.
