Abstract

The paper discusses the design and construction details of the Ayuntamiento 2000 bridge in Cuernavaca, Mexico. The bridge is a straight vehicular bridge, 200 m long and 18 m in total width, including for vehicular lanes and two pedestrian sidewalks. The superstructure is divided into six spans, each comprising nine prestressed concrete box beams, precast concrete segmental bridge piers and cast-in-place concrete foundation to column connections, slab sidewalks and abutments. The bridge, an integral part of a major transportation project for Cuernavaca region, is the first bridge in Mexico using precast columns higher than 40 m. Also discussed are the project challenges caused by the city's site on several hills, divided by east-west running gorges and a river. Labor and equipment concerns along with cost and speed of construction mandates were successfully addressed with the precast prestressed design and construction.
