Abstract

The design of bridges in park and waterway environments requires design and construction solutions that protect the environment and develop harmony with bridge and environment. The presentation of case studies of successful bridge projects in park and waterway environments demonstrates consideration of aesthetic components and leads to the development of a comprehensive design philosophy. The design philosophy outlines six themes that are used to evaluate bridge aesthetics. The result of incorporating the design philosophy is bridge designs that are environmentally sensitive to construct, serve their users, have pleasing aesthetics, and are in harmony with their environment. This paper includes several illustrations. For the covering abstract see IRRD 873033.
