Abstract

A new fully automated gas permeation system was designed and constructed for the measurement of low permeation rates and permeate compositions. The advantage of the new design over similar systems is that it is practically leak-free and it allows for the measurement of permeation rates of 1 × 10 −8 cm 3/s or lower with extreme accuracy. The composition of the permeate gas is determined simultaneously using a mass spectrometer connected to the system. The results from the leak tests and the permeation tests of oxygen, nitrogen, and methane through a homogeneous aromatic polyamide membrane are presented.
