Abstract

The transmission and reflection coefficients arising from coupling a monolithically integrated spot-size converter and single mode fiber is calculated by using the finite element and the least squares boundary residual methods. The far field pattern due to the spot-size converted field is also calculated using the mode propagation approaches. With computer simulated results, it has also been shown that efficient laser-to-fibre coupling is possible by incorporating a uniform spot-size converter with two nonidentical but phase matched optical waveguides, instead of using a tapered section. The coupling efficiency can be increased from a mere 10% to 30% and at the same time improved alignment tolerances can also be achieved.
