Abstract

A compact ultrawide band (UWB) multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antenna is presented in this paper. Miniaturization is attained by using defected ground structure (DGS). Antenna is designed using two square-shaped patch and a vertical stub in the ground plane. MIMO antenna has overall dimensions of 48 × 36 × 1.57 mm3. Proposed structure excites several characteristics mode (CM) which contributes to wide band resonance. Characteristics mode analysis (CMA) theory is used to evaluate modal significance (MS) and explaining antenna physical behaviour. Antenna shows mutual coupling less than −15 dB from 3 to 11 GHz resonating band. Envelope correlation coefficient (ECC) less than 0.01 and diversity gain more than 9.94 show diversity performance of antenna. Simulated and measured results are well matched, and antenna performance makes it a suitable candidate for UWB-MIMO applications.
